A big win for Progressives:
White House officials are preparing for Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to announce on Friday — as Congress adjourns for recess — that he is leaving his post to explore a run for mayor of Chicago
This had been speculated for some time, and while the decision has not been made final, Progressives everywhere must be taking a huge sigh of relief. It seemed like most of us were filled with joy when we first heard that Emanuel would be Chief of Staff. This was a man with a reputation for getting things done in Washington. How great was it going to be for Obama to have this brutal attack dog pursuing the liberal agenda that Obama campaigned on.
Like most things dealing with Obama, Emanuel proved to be a disappointment. Emanuel never seemed to care about Obama’s base. It has been reported that he was the one responsible for scaling back things like healthcare and other major reforms that Obama campaigned on. Whether this is true or not, the perception was that Emanuel fought for the winnable fight, the path of least resistance.
This proved to be a flawed strategy, since no matter what the White House or Dems wanted, it was repeatedly blocked. Emanuel always seemed the one behind the scenes watering down the bills in exchange for some hackneyed portrayal of bipartisanship.
Let’s just hope his departure is enough to bring back the people he chased off.
