Yes He Can’t

I lived in DC from 2004-2008 and I remember that the current mayor, Adrian Fenty, was elected in 2006 to great fanfare and seemed to be beloved by all.  All the more surprising is that he trails his Democratic opponent, and will most likely lose, leading into Tuesday’s primary.

It seems that Fenty has rubbed people the wrong way and he comes off as aloof, arrogant, and someone who doesn’t give a shit about you.  His response:

“We were so focused on getting results, we . . . didn’t take into account people’s feelings and their desire to be heard and listened to,” Fenty said in an interview.  …because we’ve just been focused on doing it rather than doing it with them, they don’t feel as good about it as I would have thought just by delivering the results.”

Even when he’s trying to be contrite he sounds like an asshole.  I think it’s great that he’s trying to make amends for his missteps, but what he is basically saying is that we knew what was right and we really saw no point in working with the community or the people that voted me into office.  Their opinions did not matter and I’ll do what I think is best to achieve the results I deem suitable and screw the rest of you for questioning me.

Think I’m wrong?  This is just four months ago.

He opened a reelection campaign headquarters with a markedly unapologetic speech. Yes, he had “ruffled some feathers,” he said then. Yes, he had made some “unpopular decisions.” But, he said again and again, “we did it because it was the right thing to do.”

In some respect you have to admire his bravado but in another respect fuck him, he’s out.
