Actually, it’s not even a mosque, it’s a “community center with prayer space,” but that hasn’t stopped deranged racists from claiming it’s a front-line base from which Islam will shoot giant lasers at America, or whatever. I’ve had enough of this story–if conservatives think that everyone but Muslims gets religious freedom, they can go fuck themselves.
Not to mention the cognitive dissonance conservatives must feel from telling a private citizen what he can and can’t do with his private property, just because it happens to be located a few blocks from Ground Zero. NY Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino even wants to cut off his nose to spite his face, using eminent domain to seize the land and block the mosque even though he realizes that he would also have to block any attempts to build a church, synagogue, or other religious institution in the Mosque Exclusion Zone. Absolutely repugnant. Paladino’s full, bullshit statement is at the end of the first link.
(No joke, Matthew Yglesias’s proposed, facetious Mosque Exclusion Zone actually matches Paladino’s: “Paladino suggested that the outline of the district could extend as far as the debris from the 9/11 attacks was distributed.” Poe’s Law at work.)
